A peeling fence can be unsightly, so getting out the paintbrush, sponge, or roller is a great way to update your garden, especially in the summer. Whilst many people aim to keep their garden fences light and bright, an expert has recommended opting for darker shades. Angela Slater from Hayes Garden World said: “Generally, a fence painted in dark colours makes an average-sized garden appear larger as it shifts the eye from the fence to the plants.
“If you have a lot of plants packed into your garden space, you can get away with black or dark graphite. This will provide a foil to the colours of your plants and make any light-coloured flowers stand out, giving the illusion of depth to your plants.”
If you have a lot of green foliage in your borders, painting your fence in dark olive or navy could help to make your garden appear bigger.
However, if you have a small courtyard garden, the gardening pro recommended opting for pastel colours such as blues, light greens and pinks.
Angela added: “Painting your courtyard in dark colours can make it look oppressive. However, if you are trying to achieve a jungle look in the space, then an olive or graphite colour would give the illusion of depth and make tropical flowers stand out.”
If you have a themed garden, such as Mexican, opting for bright colours such as oranges or yellows can help strengthen the theme.
Mediterranean-style gardens should have lots of yellows and blues, which can be added in the form of cushions, plant pots or even plants.
Angela continued: “An outdoor mirror placed at the end of a path or at the end of the garden can also make your garden appear as if there is another part to be explored.
“Better still, place an arbour covered with climbers around the mirror to further the illusion of a portal into another spacious garden.”
If you are looking to paint your fence this summer, make sure you have the correct tools, such as a paintbrush, sponge or a roller.
Make sure the weather forecast is dry to avoid ruining the fence, and make sure you notify your neighbours that you are carrying out painting on your side.
