A gardening expert has shared how to keep bugs away this Spring, recommending one particular hack that will make sure they don’t hang around your garden. Outdoor expert Sam Stevens from Pergolux UK said that keeping safe should be a number one priority for gardeners this Spring.
According to the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, around 300,000 people are injured in the garden annually. This is due to a number of reasons, mainly lawnmower accidents as well as injuries from flower pots and pruners. Additionally, bugs can cause injury and itching with bites and stings, and these can become irritating and even downright painful. However, there are some hacks you can use to keep bugs out of your garden this Spring, including buying one thing that is available in pharmacies and retail stores for as little as £2.
Sam said: “The garden is there to be enjoyed, especially as we get towards the warmer months – just make sure you’re safe.”
When it comes to keeping bugs out of the garden, Pergolux UK suggests natural repellants. These can be citronella candles or a much cheaper alternative, burning essential oils including peppermint and eucalyptus.
Such essential oils can be purchased online and in many pharmacies and retailers around the UK including Boots and Superdrug.
At Superdrug, you can get both ecalyptus and citronella essential oils for under £5. At Boots, they are slightly more expensive at around £6.50.
However, you can get a 10ml bottle of eucalyptus oil on Chemist4U for just £1.99. Burning this oil should keep pesky bugs away from your garden when you want it to, especially when you are hosting guests and eating outside in the garden.
Insects play an important role in garden maintanence, especially the likes of bees. They pollinate plants, recycle waste and keep pests away.
But when it comes to spending time in the garden with food and drink, that is when you don’t want them around and this handy trick can come into play.
Pergolux UK shared a number of other safety tips for gardening this year, including properly storing tools, following proper procedure when using electrical equipment such as mowers and trimmers, and wearing protective clothing.
