A gardening expert has revealed the best plants to grow in pots this year. Landscaper Fiona Jenkins at MyJobQuote.co.uk said pots are a great way to experiment with garden design, add depth and dimension, and brighten up any dull corners.
She recommended a variety of flowers, including chrysanthemums. Native to subtropical areas, they are white, yellow, or pink autumn-blooming ornamentals. Chrysanthemums can grow well in a large pot when planted in the spring after the last frost. Ensure that the pot has good drainage and is in an area with plenty of sunlight. Water regularly, but avoid overwatering to prevent root rot.
Buddleia was also on Jenkins’ list. Its large, drooping spikes of dense, small, purple flowers make it hugely popular with pollinators such as butterflies. Certain varieties are compact, making them ideal for pots. They are perennials and will need to be pruned back in the spring.
The expert also recommended roses. These bloom in a range of colours, from white and yellow to dark crimson and maroon. Most have a wonderful fragrance, which makes them a popular choice for gardens.
Roses are generally not considered potted plants, but patio roses are bred specifically for smaller gardens and containers. They are easy to grow, just requiring a prune in spring and repotting on occasion if necessary.
Clematis also made the cut. They are well known for their large, colourful, star-shaped or bell-shaped flowers and have a climbing or spreading habit. Some varieties grow more compactly and are suitable for large containers. To prevent wind damage, it is important to ensure that the pot has good drainage and sturdy supports.
Jenkins also recommended azaleas. They are commonly grown as ornamental garden plants for their stunning flowers, which come in various colours including white, yellow, purple, and red. The flowers often last for several weeks in their spring bloom.
Azaleas can be deciduous or evergreen shrubs. They are well-suited for pots when placed in a container with peat-free compost. They grow best in a sheltered position, either in full sunlight or partial shade.
