Fury in UK city as people living in ‘tent town’ cause chaos leaving locals terrified | UK | News

Frustrations are growing in a UK city where an illegal tent encampment has reportedly left locals feeling unsafe. In the underpass near Cardiff city centre, locals reported smelling human waste, antisocial behaviour and drug use.

Despite legal proceedings and tents being moved to different locations around the city, an individual has repeatedly returned, or set up new sites along Taffs Mead Embankment instead, reports Wales Online. The police and local council said they are aware of the issue and are working to resolve it.

One resident, who asked not to be named, claimed the current site had been there for weeks.

They said: “They are creating huge amounts of mess with litter with huge amounts of rubbish now filling the whole area under the bridge, as well as anti-social behaviour. You can smell human waste, and see the piles of rubbish growing day by day.”

The resident claimed locals have witnessed drug use, but said it “now appears the council and police have reached the point they can’t do anything more”.

“We are told they are exploring their ‘next options’ but it’s not only hugely unpleasant, walking through at night in particular feels really unsafe. It is not only deeply unpleasant to see and smell, but is dangerous.”

Various tent encampments have reportedly been moving around the area for at least a year.

A statement from South Wales Police read: “We are aware of concerns about anti-social behaviour and drug use in the area, and we are working with the local authority to address these issues.

“South Wales Police works closely with local authorities and the voluntary sector in supporting vulnerable people on our streets. As always, we encourage vulnerable people to engage with the many support agencies and outreach services available in Cardiff.”

A Cardiff council spokesperson confirmed again that the Outreach Team has contacted an individual many times and all reasonable steps have been taken to help them access support and accommodation.

They said: “Legal advice has been sought, and the council is working with the South Wales Police to take appropriate action, and it would be inappropriate to comment further until this process is complete.”
