Fury as restaurants in Spain charge tourists £8.50 more for table in the sun

Tourists have been left in shock after being faced with additional charges for opting to dine at a table in the sun while in Spain.

One person in Seville was faced with an additional £8.54 (€10) charge when asking to be moved to a table in the sun having made a reservation.

She told local media reports: “Despite having a reservation for two on the terrace, they placed us at a gloomy table.

“When requesting the change, the waitress informed us that those tables were reserved and had an additional cost of £8.54 (€10).”

She added: “What was even more annoying was sitting and watching how none of the tables under the sun filled up. As Sevillanos we love our city, we consider this situation as a lack of respect towards the guests that actually come and spend money here.”

People were left horrified by the hidden charge, with one saying “what is going on in this city”.

Another said they would “take the table home” if they were charged £8.54 (€10) to sit in the sun.

The restaurant manager told the Olive Press that the tables had been “reserved for that day”.

They added: “The clients had previously paid a supplement for this, so they could not allocate these tables to her.”

Some holidaymakers have even been turned away when asking if they can dine alone.

Anna, who lives in Barcelona, previously said she was told she “couldn’t sit alone” on the terrace even if she paid extra.

And another local, Eudald, was turned away three times after being told the terrace was “only for groups”.
