Giant Remembrance Day poppies have been removed after a ‘mindless and hugely disrespectful’ attack by vandals.

A giant poppy decorating a bandstand in Eastleigh, Hampshire, was smashed over the weekend, according to the local council.

The poppy was there in memory of sacrifices made in the First World War, but it has had to be removed alongside all the other poppies on the bandstand because of this act of vandalism.

The council thinks that the poppy was targeted on Saturday or Sunday.

The giant poppies were first installed in 2020 as a way of the council showing its support during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Since then, the poppies have been installed every year as a mark of respect.
