August is shaping up to be an exciting month for film fans on Netflix, with an eclectic mix of new premieres, beloved classics, family favourites, and action-packed franchises landing on the streaming service.

1. The Thursday Murder Club (2024)

One of the biggest original releases on Netflix this month is The Thursday Murder Club, based on Richard Osman’s bestselling crime novel that took the UK by storm.

This adaptation marks a significant collaboration between Netflix and Amblin Entertainment (Steven Spielberg’s company), with acclaimed filmmaker Chris Columbus (Harry Potter, Mrs Doubtfire, Home Alone) at the helm.

The story follows four retirees – Elizabeth (Helen Mirren), Ron (Pierce Brosnan), Ibrahim (Ben Kingsley), and Joyce (Celia Imrie) – who reside in a peaceful English village. Their weekly meetings to solve cold case murders take an unexpected turn when a real homicide occurs close to home.

2. The Departed (2006)

Winner of four Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Director for Martin Scorsese, The Departed is widely considered one of the defining crime thrillers of modern cinema.

The film is a remake of the acclaimed Hong Kong film Infernal Affairs and transplants its tale of double lives and deception to the gritty streets of Boston.

Leonardo DiCaprio plays Billy Costigan, an undercover cop assigned to infiltrate the Irish mob run by Frank Costello (Jack Nicholson). Meanwhile, Matt Damon’s character is a mole in the police department working for Costello.

The tense cat-and-mouse game is elevated by powerful supporting performances from Mark Wahlberg (who earned an Oscar nomination) and Martin Sheen.

3. Jurassic Park Trilogy

Few film franchises have captured global imaginations quite like Jurassic Park. This August sees all three original entries – Jurassic Park (1993), The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997), and Jurassic Park III (2001) – stomping their way onto Netflix.

Directed by Harold Ramis (Ghostbusters, Caddyshack), this high-concept comedy explores themes of redemption and personal growth beneath its comic surface.

Co-starring Andie MacDowell as Phil’s producer Rita Hanson, the film manages to balance sharp wit with genuine emotional depth.

6. Clueless (1995)

A modern update of Jane Austen’s novel Emma, Amy Heckerling’s Clueless became an instant classic upon release thanks to its sharp script and memorable characters.

Richard Linklater’s cult classic takes place over one day – the last day of school in Texas in 1976 – and weaves together multiple storylines about teens facing freedom or uncertainty as summer begins. The sprawling cast includes future stars Matthew McConaughey and Ben Affleck in early roles.

Praised for its authentic period detail and killer rock soundtrack featuring Aerosmith and Led Zeppelin among others,Dazed and Confused captures both the wildness and awkwardness of youth with warmth instead of cynicism.

9. The 355 (2022)

August 21

This recent addition to the spy genre brings together some of international cinema’s top actresses as elite agents who must work together when a secret weapon falls into mercenary hands.

Directed by Simon Kinberg (X-Men: Dark Phoenix, producer on several X-Men films), it offers globe-trotting action set pieces from Paris to Morocco to Shanghai.

While reviews were mixed regarding plot originality,The 355 is notable for its focus on female teamwork in an action landscape often dominated by men – and featuresx standout performances from Jessica Chastain (Zero Dark Thirty) alongside Oscar-winners Penélope Cruz (Vicky Cristina Barcelona) and Lupita Nyong’o (12 Years A Slave).

10. My Oxford Year (2024)

A film adaptation of Julia Whelan’s bestselling novel, My Oxford Year combines the atmospheric charm of Oxford University with an intimate coming-of-age story.

It follows Anna Albright (played by Sofia Carson), an ambitious young American who wins a prestigious Rhodes Scholarship to study at the University of Oxford – a dream she has nurtured since childhood.

Anna arrives in England with her life meticulously planned: ace her studies, make influential connections, and return home to embark on a promising political career. But her carefully mapped future is thrown into question when she meets Jamie Davenport (Corey Mylchreest), a charismatic and enigmatic local whose wit and outlook challenge everything Anna thought she knew about success, love, and herself.
