Every year the DVLA issues thousands upon thousands of new number plates.
The licensing authority does this each March and September – with a motor registered after March 1 owning a registration including the digits “24” and ones after September 1 featuring “74”.
With so many new plate combinations being released at these times each year it’s probably of little surprise that some can look like rude, nasty or offensive words.
Now an expert has shared what licence plates he claims will be banned this year – such as W24 NKR, SL24 GSS and SH24 GED.
To prevent offence the DVLA trawls the possible combinations and stops those that might upset the public from ever being seen on the roads.
Senior members from the agency meet twice a year in Swansea to examine the upcoming possibilities for rude plates.
The experts trawl through any combinations that could be deemed distasteful using the criteria of any that “may cause offence, embarrassment or are in poor taste”. Any that might have been missed can be taken off the roads at a later date.
However “the vast majority of registration numbers are made available” the DVLA said.
Number plate expert at Plates4Less, Tony Clark, submitted a Freedom of Information request ahead of the ‘24’ release on March 1 to reveal which number plates were deemed as “Too Rude for the Road” by the DVLA, reports GlasgowLive.
Tony said: “Rude or humorous private plates have always been popular, and can be a lot of fun.
“People choose private plates like these to customise their vehicles without personalising them.
“Some want to shock and others want to amuse their fellow road users.”
However, says Tony, where there’s a will there’s often a way.
He added: “Sometimes, the DVLA restrictions just lead to people being more creative, and trying to find rude plates that the DVLA didn’t think to ban.”
Tony revealed that five of Plates4Less’s most common searches are for rude or offensive words – with 345 people on average searching for these every day.
The 29th most popular search is the ‘C word’ – which is searched around 21 times per day. F*** is another popular search, which is searched 12.42 times per day.
