A car expert has revealed the top ten used cars that have the lowest car tax, with some costing just £20. Cazoo explains that if a car is registered before April 2017 then it will tend to come with a much lower tax bill. The car tax, or Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) rules changed in April and meant that electric vehicles, which had previously been charged on CO2 emissions will attract a flat rate of £195 per year from next year while cars worth over £40,000 will pay an Expensive Car Supplement.
Cazoo explains how older cars. those registered before 31 March 2017 will be charged based on their emissions which could mean drivers pay between £20 to £35 a year.
If your car was registered after 1 April 2025, you will pay the lowest first-year rate, but then £195 annually, owever, if you have an electriv vehicle registered before 31st March 2017 tax will be charged at £20 a year.

BMW 2 Series
The BMW 2 Series 218d or 220d diesel models registered before 1 April 2017 attract tax of £20 or £35 per year.
Ford Fiesta
Cazoo said that some previous-generation diesel models registered between 2008-2017 cost £20 a year in tax. These include the 1.5 TDCi, 1.4 TDCi or 1.6 TDCi diesel engines while 1.25-litre petrol models built between 2012 and early 2015 qualify for an annual tax rate of just £35. The 1.0 EcoBoost petrol engines also have low tax rates.
Hyundai i10
Models such as the 1.0 SE Blue from early 2017 will be charged £20 annual tax, while other pre-2017 models, such as the 1.2-litre SE and Premium models with manual gearboxes, cost less than £35 a year.
Mazda 3
The 1.5-litre and 2.2-litre diesel models will only cost you £20 a year in road tax if you choose a manual transmission. Even petrol options, such as the 1.5 and 2.0-litre models, are budget-friendly, costing just £35 a year in tax, so long as they are models registered before 1 April 2017.
Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class
The 2014-2017 Mercedes-Benz GLA diesel models, such as the 200d, cost £35 a year to tax.
Mini Hatch
The latest version of the Mini Hatch went on sale in 2014, and the 1.5 Cooper D model sold before 1 April 2017 is one of the cheapest cars to tax at £20 a year. Certain trim levels push the CO2 emissions into the next tax bracket, so they cost £35 a year. Other models to look out for in the £35 a year bracket are the diesel-powered 2.0 Cooper SD and anything with the 1.2-litre Mini One petrol engine.
Nissan Qashqai
The 2014-2017 Nissan Qashqai with a 1.5-litre or 1.6-litre diesel engine will cost either £20 or £35 a year in road tax.
Peugeot 3008
Diesel models of the Peugeot’s 3008 family SUV such as the 1.6 BlueHDi engine, have low emissions and qualify for £20 annual road tax. If you prefer petrol power, models such as the 1.2 PureTech 130 cost £35 a year.
Renault Kadjar
Pre-2017 models equipped with the 1.5 DCi diesel engine cost between £20 and £35 a year to tax, depending on the trim level. Later 1.6 litre diesel-powered models will also cost £35 a year to tax.
Volkswagen Golf
The seventh-generation Volkswagen Golf (2013-2020)1.6 TDI 105, 110 diesel and the 1.0 TSI petrol, often £20 a year to tax. Depending on their power and release date, other models—including the 2.0 TDI diesel and 1.4 TSI petrol models — cost either £20 or £35 a year to tax.
