When the popular retailer went into administration in November 2024, hundreds of Homebase stores across the UK were put at risk of closure.

As a result, only 74 of them were put up for sale, but a fresh update on the administration process has confirmed the exact branches that are next on the list to close.

Administrators for the retailer Teneo noted that the 33 sites listed, including Homebase stores in Sudbury, Cannock, and Chester, will cease trading within weeks.

In November, B&Q agreed to buy five Homebase stores, cementing its position as the country’s largest home improvement retailer. Meanwhile, Sainsbury’s secured 10 stores last year and is expected to buy three more.

Homebase noted that all affected workers have been given at least two weeks’ notice of their effective date of redundancy.

In January 2025, the administrators revealed that 13 Homebase stores were left without buyers and were closed.

It follows a tumultuous decade for the high street chain, which operated as a subsidiary of the Home Retail Group for 10 years, starting in October 2006. In February 2016, Australian retailer Wesfarmers, owner of the Bunnings brand, purchased Homebase for £340million.

Just two years later, in February 2018, Wesfarmers reported losses relating to the takeover of £57million in the year to June 2017 and subsequently decided to review the business.

The landmark sale was made in May 2018, when Hilco bought the hardware store chain for a memorable £1. At its peak before the Hilco takeover, Homebase had 250 stores and 11,500 staff.
