The world’s best cities for food in 2025 have been ranked by Time Out, with New Orleans claiming the top spot. The Southern US city edged out global culinary giants like Paris and Madrid, thanks to its rich fusion of French, Spanish, Vietnamese, and African influences.

Time Out surveyed more than 18,500 people about their city’s food scene, evaluating destinations based on affordability, quality, and diversity. A panel of food experts, including chefs and writers, then weighed in to finalize the list. Grace Beard, Travel Editor at Time Out, said: “Food is the backbone of local culture in our cities and the reason many of us choose to travel.”

10. Jakarta, Indonesia

Jakarta’s cuisine is a melting pot influenced by Dutch, Indian, Chinese, and Arab cultures. Street food hubs like Jalan Sabang serve Madura noodles, grilled satay, and smoky claypot rice, while upscale restaurants like Caspar and Henshin bring global flavors to the table.

9. Paris, France

Paris’s culinary scene is more vibrant than ever, with new restaurants opening constantly. While on the pricier side, the city’s bistros and fine-dining establishments, such as Le Gabriel and Lissit, offer reinvented French classics.

8. Shanghai, China

Shanghai boasts 5,000 years of food history, with a mix of regional cuisines from Guizhou, Xinjiang, and Yunnan. Locals love shengjianbao, the city’s crispy-bottomed, broth-filled dumplings.

7. Lagos, Nigeria

Lagos is a food lover’s paradise, known for its bold flavours and affordability. From smoky party jollof rice to deep-fried puff-puff, the city’s vibrant street food scene is a must-try.

6. Mexico City, Mexico

With tacos al pastor, torta de chilaquiles, and world-renowned restaurants like Pujol and Quintonil, Mexico City is a true culinary hotspot. A growing presence of top-notch Italian, Korean, and Thai restaurants adds to its appeal.

5. Madrid, Spain

The Spanish capital’s dining scene is both diverse and experimental. Madrid’s chefs are pushing boundaries, with Michelin-starred La Tasquería leading the charge. Must-try dish? Pabú’s fresh produce-based creations.

4. Cape Town, South Africa

Cape Town’s cuisine blends Asian, European, and African influences. Time Out Market showcases the city’s top culinary talent, while Bree Street, dubbed “Gourmet Boulevard”, offers unmissable food experiences. The must-try dish? The Gatsby, a towering sandwich stuffed with chips, salad, and a choice of filling.

3. Medellín, Colombia

Medellín stands out for its affordability and rich flavours. From bandeja paisa platters to fine dining in El Poblado, the city offers something for every palate. Exotic fruits like chirimoya and gulupa are also highlights.

2. Bangkok, Thailand

Bangkok’s street food scene is legendary, with Michelin-starred restaurants and $3 meals coexisting seamlessly. For an authentic experience, try som tam (green papaya salad) at Hai Som Tam Convent.

1. New Orleans, USA

Crowned the best city for food in 2025, New Orleans offers a culinary experience like no other. From classic dishes like shrimp Creole and jambalaya to contemporary restaurants like Dakar and Acamaya, the city celebrates food year-round with festivals dedicated to gumbo, beignets, and more.
