Britain’s beloved fish and chips remains a cherished comfort food for countless people – and now 10 chippies have been named as the nation’s best.
The coveted Restaurant of the Year accolade will be presented at the National Fish and Chip Awards, which celebrates exceptional seafood offerings nationwide.
Last year’s triumph belonged to the Framwellgate Moor branch of Bells Fish and Chips, located in County Durham, though this year’s victor could represent a fresh contender.
As part of this year’s remarkable prize, the top three establishments will receive an invitation to an immersive journey to Iceland, where they’ll gain the opportunity to discover the Icelandic seafood sector.
The former champion now attracts visitors from considerable distances to sample their offerings, with numerous glowing testimonials flooding in to commend their “traditional” fare and “friendly” service from personnel.
One delighted TripAdvisor review said: “Some of the best fish and chips I have had in the UK! We ate here for lunch, and I am glad I did. I have been recommending them to everyone since!”
Andrew Crook, president of the National Federation of Fish Friers, added: “The shortlisted 10 are making long-lasting contributions to uphold the great British institution of fish and chips, whether it’s with a traditional take or elevated to fine dining status. I have a feeling that Restaurant of the Year is going to be a tough one to separate the winner – all the best to our contenders.”
Regarding the finest takeaway options, the previous year witnessed three establishments claim the premier positions, all scattered across different regions of the UK, from Scotland right down to Land’s End in Cornwall.
Yarm Road Fish and Chips, located in Darlington, County Durham, claimed victory, with The Fish Works in Largs, Scotland, taking second place, whilst Kellaway’s Fish and Chips, situated in Truro, Cornwall, secured third position as a leading takeaway.
