Fred Warner impresses in return to 49ers practice

Fred Warner is starting to look more and more like a player who will be available for the 49ers this postseason.

The injured linebacker practiced in front of media members on Wednesday for the first time since breaking and dislocating his ankle in October, and he impressed.

The 29-year-old — wearing a helmet, shorts and a red No. 54 jersey — was spotted hitting a sled without issue.

Later in the San Francisco workout, he started and stopped on his injured leg while showing no signs of a limp.

Warner first got hurt during the Niners’ Week 6 matchup with the Buccaneers, and after he had surgery to fix the issue, he was ruled out for the regular season.

But he’s made quite the recovery since, and on Tuesday, the team opened his practice window.

In announcing the roster move, Kyle Shanahan said Warner would not be ready for Saturday’s Divisional Round matchup with the Seahawks, although he was optimistic about the star’s availability for the NFC Championship Game should the 49ers win.

Warner, though, didn’t exactly rule himself out of the Seattle game while meeting with media members prior to Wednesday’s practice.

“We’re taking it day by day,” the four-time Pro Bowler said. “I think they said last week they weren’t going to open my window and my window’s now open. So, we’re just taking it day by day.

“The expectation is to continue to take it day by day and see where we’re at.”

Kickoff for the big Niners vs. Seahawks showdown is slated for 5 p.m. PT at Lumen Field.
