Frank Lampard and John Mousinho forcibly separated in touchline row | Football | Sport

Coventry City boss Frank Lampard was embroiled in a heated touchline spat with Portsmouth’s John Mousinho on Tuesday night. Currently, Lampard’s Sky Blues are flying high, sitting atop the Championship table.

The ex-Chelsea midfielder took the reins at Coventry in November 2024, stepping into the shoes of the much-loved Mark Robins. Early days at the club were challenging for Lampard, with fans expressing discontent over the decision to dismiss Robins, who had guided the club to the play-off final and FA Cup semi-final in the preceding two years.

However, the 47-year-old has likely won many fans over with Coventry’s stellar start to the 2024/25 season. His fiery touchline antics will undoubtedly endear him to the club’s supporters, especially after he was caught on camera in a heated exchange with Mousinho during Tuesday’s match at Fratton Park.

The disagreement erupted midway through the first half in Portsmouth when the two managers clashed over Pompey’s claim for a penalty. Referee Gavin Ward did not award the spot-kick but Coventry ended up 2-1 victors on the south coast.

The pair continued their debate over the incident, leading to a visible argument. Mousinho seemed to be voicing his complaints to fourth official Stephen Martin, prompting a sharp response from Lampard.

Both managers were separated by Martin, with on-site reporters describing it as a protracted dispute.

Tuesday’s incident isn’t the first time Lampard has clashed with a fellow manager on the touchline.

The Englishman, who has previously been at the helm of Derby, Chelsea, and Everton, notably lashed out at then Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp in 2020, declaring: “Only league title you’ve ever won and you’re f****** giving it the big ‘un… f*** off!”

The confrontation triggered a wave of online discussion and remained a talking point amongst supporters for considerable time.

Nevertheless, the former England midfielder subsequently voiced his remorse regarding the heated altercation with Klopp.

Lampard also disclosed which aspects of the exchange he absolutely felt no regret about and stated he wishes the stadium’s silence, caused by pandemic restrictions, hadn’t amplified his remarks to everyone.

Speaking on The Optus Sport Football Podcast in December 2022, the then-Everton boss admitted: “I’ve got to be careful to say that I’d never do it again because if I do you can replay this. I regret my wording, I don’t regret my passion and I probably regret there were no fans in the stadium to drown out the noise because these things do happen and we see them.”

Lampard acknowledged that the high-pressure circumstances of the fixture might have fuelled his explosive response, as Liverpool were in celebratory spirits whilst his Chelsea side were fighting for a top-four position.

The former Derby head coach conceded he could have managed his emotions more effectively, whilst also recognising the enormous strain experienced by elite-level managers. “When I see another manager, I appreciate the passion and I understand the pressures and the reality of that game was that we were fighting to be in the Champions League positions in the last three games or whatever it was,” he said.

“Liverpool were in party mode because they were going to be given the Premier League trophy after the game so it was a pressure game for us and maybe that’s just how I am and maybe you’ve just got to control yourself better at different times.”
