A woman’s body was tragically discovered at the bottom of cliffs near Whitby, marking the fourth such incident in the area within three days, according to North Yorkshire Police.
The coastal team of the force reported that the woman, aged in her 50s and from the local area, was found below the cliffs behind the main car park at Sandsend, close to Whitby.
She was spotted by a passerby at 11.01am who promptly alerted emergency services.
This tragic incident follows the deaths of a man and a woman, both believed to be in their 40s, who fell from the cliffs at Whitby on July 30, as well as another woman, aged in her 60s, found near the cliffs by the pavilion on July 31.
Officers are operating under the assumption that her death also resulted from “a fall from the cliff” at this popular seaside beauty spot, reports The Mirror.
An investigation into the latest death has been launched by the police, although it is not being treated as suspicious.
The force confirmed that these four separate tragedies are not connected in any way.
This comes after a dead body was discovered in an ‘underground ancient cave’ at a popular UK beauty spot.
In relation to the most recent incident, a spokesperson for North Yorkshire Police stated: “Teams from the police, ambulance, coastguard, lifeboat and fire service attended. The woman’s body was recovered at 12.55pm and the scene was reopened at 2.15pm following extensive enquiries.
“It has been confirmed that the woman is aged in her 50s and from the local area. Officers are supporting the woman’s family at this difficult time. The death is not being treated as suspicious and a report is being prepared for the coroner.”
The service has urged potential witnesses to step forward, stating in a previous official announcement that individuals with relevant information should ring the police non-emergency number 101, quoting reference number 12250143585.
