As we creep into the colder months of the year, many start thinking about how the climate will change, which means you may have thought about some essential items to stockpile. However, if we do experience some extreme weather during the winter months, there is some food that’s worth stocking up on.
Previously, the topic was brought up on Reddit as somebody wondered what the best foods are to have to hand in an extreme situation, such as bad weather. They wrote: “What’s the best UK food to keep in the house for an emergency?” and it triggered a lot of conversation.
However, it turns out, there are some staples you may just want to have around. It comes after people were advised on what food to get in amid WW3 fears.
After the social media user asked the question, people put forward all sorts of ideas. The recommendations were quite varied.
One said: “Pasta – keeps for months, if not years. Use a marker pen to keep age order.”
Another added: “It really depends on the emergency, but remember, this is the UK – not an area with any history of natural disasters that cause damage on a wide scale or long duration.”
A third replied: “Keep a rolling stock of things you normally eat. We keep pasta, tuna, tinned beans and pulses, tinned tomatoes, sweetcorn, long-life milk, corned beef, noodles, dried beans and lentils, flour, lots of spices and salt.
“Only thing I’m always short on is water, because of limited space and I hate the whole idea of bottled water.”
However, there are actually some items that are advised to be the best things you can buy in advance. If you can’t leave the house for a while for whatever reason, they should help to see you through.

What do you need?
There are said to be four main types of food that are especially recommended people keep at home, as they could help you if there was ever severe weather or an emergency. A good place to start would be complex carbohydrates such as crackers, breads, oats, rice and pasta.
It’s also good to try and get some proteins into your diet if you struggle to get to the shops for a while. You can add things to your cupboards such as canned chickpeas, lentils, kidney beans, unsalted nuts and canned oily fish.
These should be able to keep for a while. If you’re ever stuck indoors for a prolonged period, they’ll come in pretty handy.
As fresh fruit can spoil quickly, stock up on tinned varieties. You can also drink the juice found in the cans to offer extra fluids, vitamins and fibre.
It’s also wise to keep some long-life milk found in the non-refrigerated section of the supermarket. This will aid in protein, calcium and also offer a source of fluid.
When buying tinned goods, make sure you check their salt and sugar content. Try and opt for foods that will aid your health.
