‘Forget Spain, Greece and Italy – this beautiful country should be your next holiday’ | World | News

Across Europe, there’s a wealth of breathtaking countries offering incredible views, vibrant cities and welcoming locals. However, one European destination rising in popularity is Malta, a picturesque country home to some amazing cities and towns. Joanne Lynn, a Travel Expert at Riviera Travel, has revealed why Malta should be at the top of your travel list this summer, including the top hidden gems to be found across this destination.

“While popular destinations like Spain, France and Portugal often take centre stage, I believe Malta is an underrated gem that deserves a prime spot on your travel bucket list,” the expert said. “Interest in this Mediterranean island has been steadily growing, thanks to its rich history, stunning coastline, and a more laid-back vibe than Europe’s busier holiday hotspots. Malta offers the perfect balance of adventure and relaxation.”

Ms Lynn said that Malta is a city beaming with history. The country’s capital city, Valletta, is the smallest in the entirety of Europe and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1980 due to its preservation of the late Renaissance era.

For history lovers, Malta is a great place to learn about Roman rule, the Knights of St John and the impacts of the British Empire. In the capital, museums such as the National War Museum and Lascaris War Rooms are must-visit locations.

“If you’re a lover of natural landscapes, picturesque beaches and dazzling views, look no further than Malta,” Ms Lynn said. “From the Blue Lagoon, found on the Maltese island of Comino, to the Golden Bay, there’s plenty of opportunity to take in this country’s wonderful natural beauty.”

The hot temperatures of Malta make it perfect for a summer holiday spot, with average temperatures of 24C in June and an average of 27C in July – the expert also noted very little rainfall.

Maltese cuisine takes a lot of inspiration from its European counterparts, creating a blend of Mediterranean, Italian and British-style dishes. Locally, dishes such as Bigilla, Ġbejna and Pastizzi are great ways to experience Maltese cuisine.

“In Valletta, restaurants such as The Rooftop Restaurant are particularly popular; alternatively, while in Sliema, be sure to visit eateries like Kalama,” the travel expert advises.

Malta is home to a plethora of hidden gems. Travel expert Ms Lynn has narrowed down her top four which includes Dingli.

She said: “This small village is found near the Dingli Cliffs, a go-to tourist attraction as it’s the highest point in the country. While in Dingli, I recommend visiting the St Mary Magdalene Chapel and the 1640 Wine Room, a preserved bar dating back to the 17th century.”

Home to incredible ancient temples, such as the Mnajdra Temples and the Hagar Qim Temple, Qrendi is another hidden gem destination to be found in Malta. The expert says a must-see is the Blue Grotto, a sea cave with vibrant colours that can be experienced via boat tours.

Ms Lynn also recommends Marsaxlokk, a small fishing village found on the southern coast of Malta and Għaxaq, located in the southern region of the country.
