Foreign student broke into student’s room and commited ‘vile’ sex act | UK | News

An overseas university student broke into a first year female undergraduate’s bedroom and defiled her belongings after becoming “overcome with desire”. Indian Udkarsh Yadav, son of a building magnate in his home country, committed a sex act on her bedcovers and teddy bears after a university administration error gave him “access all areas”.

Civil engineering undergraduate Udkarsh Yadav ejaculated on the victim’s duvet cover and Jellycat teddies having gained access to her bedroom at the Northumbria University accommodation by using a gym keycard that had been incorrectly set up and allowed him into “all rooms”. The victim returned to find a crusty “white substance” on her bed cover and her soft toys. After admitting his offences Yadav escaped with a suspended prison sentence whilst the university demanded he move to different accommodation. Following his conviction he now faces being kicked off his course by university chiefs and sent home in shame.

A spokesperson insisted the “administrative error” with the key cards was quickly resolved.

Appearing before Newcastle Crown Court Jennifer Coxon, prosecuting, told Newcastle Crown Court how the key card data subsequently exposed Yadav as the intruder before DNA from the room proved a positive match.

Miss Coxon said when Yadav was initially interviewed he made no reply but added: “He was re-interviewed and the DNA evidence was put to him. He admitted the offence, stating he was overcome with desire and he was aware that the gym cards were set up incorrectly, which allowed access to all rooms.”

The victim said she had pictures of herself on the wall and she was so worried about the fact an “unknown man has committed a sex act in my room” that she went to stay with a friend.

Yadav, 18, who had never been in trouble before and had a “lack of maturity” admitted burglary with intent to cause criminal damage.

Mr Recorder Mark McKone KC said: “I don’t think I have ever come across anything like this before. “It really is hard to imagine what was going through the defendant’s mind when he did this.”

Recorder McKone said the victim had been at home with her family for Christmas and returned to the student flat in early January and added: “She arrived back and noticed some books on the floor and there was a white crusted substance across her bedcovers and teddy bears.

“It seems you ejaculated in her room and on her bed.

“This was a disgusting and selfish thing to do. You must have know the stress this would cause.

“This was her first time away from home. She was left shaken over the thought you masturbated while looking at pictures of her on the wall.”

Yadav was sentenced to 14 months suspended for two years, with rehabilitation requirements, 200 hours unpaid work and £117 compensation for three Jellycat soft toys and bed covers.

Shada Mellor, defending, said Yadav’s father owns a construction business in India.

She said Yadav chose to study in the UK as he wants to succeed and “leave a lasting impact on the world” and added: “His behaviour on the day in question is wholly out of character.”

The court heard Yadav was moved out of university accommodation and told he had to find alternative living arrangements.

Miss Mellor said Yadav, who has completed first year and wants to progress to masters level, has a student visa but would have to leave the UK if that were withdrawn.

She added: “The university has said they will consider that position following the sentencing hearing.”

A Northumbria University Spokesperson said: “We were made aware of an administrative error resulting in access to unauthorised areas in one of our partner-managed student accommodation buildings.

“Immediate action was taken to ensure the issue was resolved. The University has been assured by its accommodation provider that more stringent controls are now in place.

“Whilst we are unable to comment on individual student circumstances, any student who is found in breach of University regulations will be subject to our robust disciplinary procedures.

“The University continually reviews policies and procedures to ensure the ongoing safety and wellbeing of all our students.”
