The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) has issued updated advice for Britons travelling to Trinidad and Tobago after the Caribbean nation declared a state of emergency on December 30.

The emergency measures, which remain in effect, were introduced in response to escalating gang-related violence across the country.

While no curfews or restrictions on public gatherings have been imposed, British travellers have been warned to expect heightened security measures.

Police and military forces have been granted expanded powers under the state of emergency, including the ability to search individuals and properties without a warrant.

They are also authorised to arrest and detain people without requiring prior approval.

Visitors can anticipate a noticeable increase in the presence of police and military personnel throughout Trinidad and Tobago.

The FCDO has stressed the importance of carrying identification at all times and fully complying with local authorities.

The advisory stated: “Expect heightened police and military presence. Always carry your ID and comply with local authorities.”

Trinidad and Tobago is a popular destination known for its lively Carnival celebrations, a blend of African, Indian, and European cuisine, golden beaches, and diverse wildlife.

However, British visitors are urged to remain cautious during this period and consult up-to-date travel guidance before planning a trip.

The FCDO advised travellers to review its latest advice on safety, entry requirements, health precautions, and insurance policies to ensure their journey remains safe.

The travel warning for Trinidad and Tobago comes amid a series of other recent advisories.

Britons travelling to South Korea were cautioned to remain vigilant due to unpredictable developments, while a Middle East travel update highlighted safety risks following recent fatalities.

While the state of emergency may affect the ease of travel, Trinidad and Tobago remains an iconic destination celebrated for its natural beauty and rich cultural heritage.

Visitors are encouraged to stay informed, exercise caution, and cooperate fully with local authorities to enjoy a safe and memorable trip.
