The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) has issued a crucial reminder to British travellers about an essential document needed alongside passports and visas when heading abroad.

As Britain’s leading authority on international matters, the FCDO regularly provides updates on travel-related issues.

With travel guidance covering over 220 countries and territories, the FCDO took to X, previously known as Twitter, on Monday to offer timely advice for those planning getaways in the coming months.

The post reads: “Escaping for some winter sun? Travel insurance should be part of your checklist – alongside passports and visas. Make sure you’re covered before you go.”

Additional information on the FCDO website stresses the importance of securing travel insurance prior to departure, as it offers protection against unforeseen circumstances including medical emergencies, trip cancellations or delays, lost suitcases, and natural disasters.

The FCDO warns: “You must purchase cover that is appropriate for your travel plans. Travelling without the right cover can be very expensive if things do go wrong while you are abroad.”

Data from the Association of British Insurers (ABI) reveals that travel insurance claims are climbing.

In 2022, one holidaymaker in Thailand contracted a severe blood infection, accumulating medical expenses totalling £250,000, which their travel insurance company covered in full.

Another traveller, who visited Spain, required private medical care for a kidney infection – racking up medical bills to the tune of £15,000.
