Ford has issued a recall for almost 700,000 vehicles due to concerns around two model’s fuel systems. In a notice sent to the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (NHTSA), Ford confirms the issue is centred around a cracked fuel injector.
There are concerns that the damaged component could lead to fuel leaks, which will increase the risk of fires. The NHTSA report confirms the issue will impact Ford Escape models built between 2020 and 2022 and Ford Bronco Sport vehicles manufactured between 2021 and 2024. The report specifies that a total of 694,271 vehicles are affected by the latest notice.
The issue is only likely to impact vehicles in the USA at this stage with the Ford Bronco Sport not even officially sold in the UK. The NHTSA report said: “Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2021-2024 Bronco Sport and 2020-2022 Escape vehicles equipped with 1.5L engines.
“A fuel injector may crack and leak fuel inside the engine compartment. A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source, such as hot engine or exhaust components, can increase the risk of a fire.”
However, Ford seemed to suggest that mechanics are yet to find a long-term fix for the problem with temporary repairs being offered at this stage. These interim fixes will involve updates to the vehicle’s engine control system with motorists set to enjoy the repairs completely free.
The NHTSA report added: “The remedy is currently under development. As an interim repair, dealers will update the engine control software, free of charge.
“Owner notification letters notifying owners of the safety risk are expected to be mailed August 18, 2025. Second letters will be sent once the remedy is available.”
