Roles in William Oldroyd’s Lady Macbeth and the TV series The Little Drummer Girl for the BBC kept her in the spotlight, leading to a peak in her career when she starred in Ari Aster’s popular horror Midsommar in 2019.

She was then cast in Greta Gerwig’s Little Women alongside the likes of Emma Watson, Timothée Chalamet and Saoirse Ronan, and then in Marvel blockbuster Black Widow alongside Scarlett Johansson.

Speaking on her Marvel role, Pugh told Time Out: “I was really invested in the oddities of Yelena. I wanted her to be different. To dress strange and say weird things.”

She praised, Black Widow director Cate Shortland, stating: “Cate encouraged me to be even stranger. I really appreciated her taking away the whole glitz and glam and allowing me to do what I do.”

Her career was further bolstered when she starred in Olivia Wilde’s follow-up to Booksmart, Don’t Worry Darling, this time opposite Harry Styles and then Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer with the likes of Cillian Murphy, Matt Damon and Robert Downey Jr and castmates.

Due to her expansive career and place in pop culture landscape, Pugh has become. leading voice in the industry with fans eager to hear what she has to say.

So when the actor took to X to reveal her favourite film, it didn’t go unnoticed. Pugh highlighted Abdellatif Kechiche’s Blue is the Warmest Colour as her top choice.

One of the finest examples of LGBTQ+ modern cinema, Blue is the Warmest Colour follows Adèle (Adèle Exarchopoulos) whose life is turned upside down when she meets Emma, played by Léa Seydoux, a mysterious blue-haired girl. The film has become known as a classic modern love story and is rated highly on Rotten Tomtoes, with a score of 88%.
