Flood warnings have been issued to 73 areas in the UK in the coming days by the Environment Agency. There are a total of 54 alerts and warnings in England, seven in Scotland, and eight in Wales.
The Government recommends Brits to prepare for flooding by moving important documents and possessions and storing them in a location where they won’t be damaged by floodwater, for example, in a waterproof container. A flood kit should include warm, waterproof, and dry clothing and footwear; a torch; drinking water; medicine; toys for children; baby care items; and a mobile phone or device charger, or spare batteries. Immediately before a flood, turn off water, electricity, and gas, lift curtains over rails, use door guards and air brick covers, put rugs and small furniture upstairs or on tables, and move pets and cars to somewhere safe.
During a flood, follow warnings and advice, do not drive or walk through floodwater, check on friends and family, and do not put yourself or others at risk.
This comes after the national forecaster issued yellow and red weather warnings for Storm Goretti last week, affecting 96 areas across the UK with snow, rain, wind, and freezing temperatures.
The Met Office said as temperatures increase, snow melt and a “rapid thaw” across the north of the UK, coupled with further rain, could lead to flooding concerns.
Met Office meteorologist Tom Morgan said: “Combined with the rainfall, the higher temperatures, we will see some flooding due to the snow melt gradually as we go through the next few days, so that’s the main concern.”
Flooding can be checked in England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland Government websites.
