Fears petrol and diesel cars to be ‘worthless’ after 2030 ban rebuked

When asked if petrol and diesel cars would be worthless in 10 years, Parkers stressed this was unlikely to be the case.

They explained: “No. While there will be less demand for new ones as 2035 hoves into view, there will still be a very active market for used cars, especially from those people who are unable to run an electric car on financial or lifestyle grounds.

“And with the average life of a new car standing at 16 years, if you buy one in 2034, you’ll be possibly running it well into the 2050s.”

The UK was set to introduce its ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel vehicles in 2035 but Labour has promised to bring this forward.

The manifesto pledge is already in the pipeline, with Government officials launching a consultation to find ways to reach the 2030 target.

The Zero Emissions Vehicle (ZEV) mandate is already slowly shutting down petrol and diesel combustion with higher zero-emission targets in 2025 than ever before.

Despite this, there are no plans to introduce further restrictions on second-hand cars, meaning used petrol and diesel models can still use the roads freely.

Although a national ban is not in the pipeline at this stage, specialists have warned second-hand petrol and diesel owners may still be hit with some kind of restrictions.

Experts at PodPoint have previously claimed local authorities could introduce blanket restrictions on car usage down certain streets.

They said: “You’ll still be able to drive your petrol or diesel car after 2035 if you wish. The ban won’t stop people already owning ICE cars from using them.

“That might not be the case everywhere. If current Clean Air Zones expand or become stricter, we may see the total ban of ICE cars entering certain areas at specific or all times.”
