Facebook down: Users locked out of accounts as 'session expired' message explained

Facebook users have been locked out of their accounts, many of them receiving a “session expired” message. On Friday, when people tried to visit Facebook, they saw messages like “session expired” or “unexpected error”.

Sometimes this happens because the internet cuts out, but this time it’s because Facebook itself is having issues with its network.

Loads of people got kicked out of their accounts and couldn’t get back in, even when they tried to reset their passwords. Some tried to get a code sent to their phones to help them log in, but many people online reported that no such text came through.

The website Downdetector, which keeps an eye on when websites stop working, reports that around 160,000 people have had problems with Facebook, reports the Mirror.

Instagram, which is owned by the same company as Facebook, Meta, is also acting up. Someone moaned about it on social media site X, formerly Twitter, saying: “I got a message saying Facebook will send me a text message to log back in but the text message isn’t arriving.”

Express.co.uk has contacted Meta for comment.
