Face masks return to hospitals as 'tripledemic' cases of Covid, flu and RSV surge

A concerning surge in cases and hospitalizations related to the combined impact of Covid-19, seasonal flu, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) has prompted hospitals across the United States to reimpose mask mandates for staff, patients, and visitors.

Recent data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reveals a notable increase in respiratory virus cases, with flu admissions rising by a staggering 48 percent in the week ending December 23, compared to the previous seven-day period. This surge in flu cases is also up nearly 90 percent over the same time in 2019, before the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Covid-19 hospitalizations also experienced a concerning uptick of 17 percent within a week. Meanwhile, RSV, which the CDC director had previously mentioned as having ‘peaked’ last month, is showing signs of resurgence.

The impact of these respiratory illnesses is particularly straining children’s hospitals in some states, with healthcare professionals describing this winter’s virus season as the “worst” they have witnessed.

The figures, although not yet fully reflecting the potential impact of holiday gatherings, have prompted hospitals in at least seven states to reintroduce mask mandates within the last 30 days. More than 30 hospital systems across 16 states have now reinstated these restrictions, with healthcare professionals anticipating additional health systems to follow suit.

Mass General Brigham hospital in Massachusetts recently became the latest healthcare institution to reintroduce mask requirements. The hospital justified this decision by citing a significant number of patients in its units presenting with respiratory illnesses.

The reintroduction of mask mandates is part of a broader strategy to curb the escalation of respiratory diseases, especially as the winter weather encourages more indoor activities, facilitating the spread of such illnesses.

Despite some studies failing to definitively establish the efficacy of face masks in preventing the spread of respiratory viruses, hospitals are implementing these measures as a proactive step to mitigate potential risks.

The reintroduction of mask mandates aims to protect both healthcare workers and patients, preventing the further strain on already overwhelmed healthcare systems.

Experts caution that the current numbers, which already indicate an alarming rise, may further escalate in January as colder temperatures drive more people indoors. The “triple threat” of Covid-19, flu, and RSV, coupled with the potential complications from pneumococcal pneumonia, poses significant challenges to public health.

In response to the climbing cases, Mass General Brigham became the latest health system to reimplement face masks, stating that the coverings would be required for healthcare staff interacting directly with patients and “strongly encouraged” for patients and visitors.

Other health systems, including Dana Farber Cancer Institute, Boston Medical Center, Endeavor Health, and Cook County Health, have also reinstated mask requirements for patient-facing staff, patients, and visitors.

The reinstatement of face mask mandates is not limited to specific regions, as it spans across various states, including California, Connecticut, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Wisconsin.
