Mercedes driver George Russell has been told by ex-Formula One chief Guenther Steiner his seat for the 2026 season isn’t ‘100 per cent’.

The Brit is set to assume the position as Mercedes lead man following Lewis Hamilton’s impending exit to Ferrari.

But with his contract due to expire next season, Steiner isn’t convinced Russell is a lock for an extension… yet.

Speaking to the Red Flags podcast: “George has got all the interest to do to whatever is there to show that he’s the leader of the team for the future.

“He has to prove that, because he knows that because he knows that when his Mercedes contract is up, his seat is not 100 per-cent safe so he just tries to do his best, puts everything into it.”
