The Mexican Grand Prix is seemingly in line for a contract extension after the head of government in Mexico City, Clara Brugaga, explained that the new agreement will be signed ‘next week’. The iconic Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez produces one of the most exhilarating atmospheres on the F1 calendar, but the race’s contract is due to expire at the end of the 2025 season. The Mexican GP’s terms were most recently extended in 2022.
However, when Sergio Perez was dropped from the grid at the end of the 2024 campaign, concerns were raised about whether or not the race would remain on the schedule moving forward. With such intense competition for spots on the calendar, nearly every circuit is sweating over its security.
However, despite there being no guarantees that Perez will be back in the paddock in 2026, the Mexican GP looks to be heading for a renewed deal. Brugada announced in a press conference on Thursday that “next week, we will be signing the agreement with F1”.
While Mexico is currently without a driver to call its own on the F1 grid, Perez hasn’t given up on a return to the sport. The six-time Grand Prix winner has been heavily linked with a move to Cadillac, who are looking for an experienced star to spearhead their development when they become the sport’s 11th team in 2026.
A report from The Times explained that the 35-year-old is in ‘advanced talks’ with the American squad, who have also been linked with moves for IndyCar sensation Colton Herta, Mercedes reserve driver Valtteri Bottas and F1 reserve duo Frederik Vesti and Felipe Drugovich.
Perez explained his stance in an interview with the official Formula One website after leaving Red Bull. “If I find a project that motivates me fully to come back, where the team believe in me and appreciate my career, my experience and everything I can bring to a team, it would be very attractive,” he said.
“That’s why I’ve given myself at least six months to get all my options on the table and make a decision on what I do next with my career. There are a few very interesting projects out there. I’ve been approached by a few teams since Abu Dhabi.
“Right now, the season has started, so a few things will open up in the coming months. We are talking to a few parties out there. Once I know all my options, I will make a decision. What is very clear to me is that I’m only coming back if the project makes sense and it’s something I can enjoy.”
