A rare Beatrix Potter 50 pence coin has surpassed its face value by more than 50,000 times, listed for over £25,000 on eBay.

The pricey collectable, engraved with the face of Benjamin Bunny from Beatrix Potter’s beloved tales, is listed for £25,086.72 or the best offer from its seller in Morpeth.

The eBay seller wrote: “This rare piece celebrates the beloved character from Potter’s enchanting tales, and is a splendid addition to any collection of British decimal coinage.

“It’s a must-have for enthusiasts of Potter’s work and a timeless piece of numismatic artistry. Struck in 2017, the coin features the charming depiction of Benjamin Bunny, showcasing the exquisite detail and craftsmanship that the Royal Mint is renowned for.”

A 2017 coin with the same Benjamin Bunny design is listed for £8 on the Royal Mint website, after being in circulation.

The collector’s piece was designed by Emma Noble to commemorate Beatrix Potter’s 150th Anniversary, featuring the mischeivous Benjamin Bunny wearing a hat borrowed from another character in the book, Mr. McGregor’s scarecrow.

Having been minted under the late Queen Elizabeth II in 2017, the flipside of the design features a the coinage portrait of her Royal Highness, which was designed by Jody Clark.

Other coins in the collection include a Peter Rabbit design, as well as Mrs Tiggy Winkle, Flopsy Bunny and Jemima Puddle-Duck.

The most expensive coin believed to ever be sold was the 794 Flowing Hair Silver Dollar, which sold at auction for $12 million in 2022.
