If you want your garden roses to thrive, expert gardeners say two essential steps could make a huge difference and they’re not hard to do yourself. Roses are a popular flower to grow in the garden thanks to their colour and vibrancy. But with summer on the way, it’s important to make sure your roses will be looking their best as the weather gets warmer and you spend more time outdoors.

RHS has suggested a couple of easy gardening jobs which could make a huge difference and by doing this now, you could ensure thriving roses this summer. It’s time to get out into your garden and prepare your plants to look their best.

RHS says you should remove dead, diseased, or damaged shoots, and open up the centre of the plant to improve air circulation.

It adds: “The two key aims of pruning are to keep the plant healthy and shape it correctly.”

These practices not only enhance the plant’s health but also encourage robust growth and vibrant blooms.

By removing any dead stems, you can easily ensure your plant will already be looking much better straight away.

These parts of the plant can harbour pests and diseases, potentially spreading them to healthier areas.

By cutting these back to healthy tissue, you help the plant conserve energy and resources, directing them toward new, healthy growth.

Look for stems that appear brown, brittle, or blackened which are signs your plant could be dying in these parts.

If you spot any canes with discolored leaves, prune them immediately to prevent the spread of disease.

RHS adds: “Pruning may sound tricky but is, in fact, generally quick and easy once you get the hang of it.”

The second tip is to create an open, vase-like shape by removing crossing or inward-growing branches is crucial for improving air circulation within the plant.

This practice reduces humidity around the foliage, deterring fungal diseases such as powdery mildew and black spot.

Additionally, better airflow allows sunlight to reach all parts of the plant, promoting even growth and more abundant blooms.

Always make cuts just above an outward-facing bud to encourage growth away from the centre of the plant.

By following these two key steps, you can ensure your roses remain healthy and produce beautiful flowers throughout the growing season.

Regular maintenance and proper pruning techniques are vital for the long-term success of your rose garden.
