Peace lilies are renowned for their stunning white spathes, yet these do turn brown and fade during the summer months. Whilst many individuals may find it challenging to encourage their peace lily houseplant to bloom again, one gardening expert has revealed his essential techniques to ensure yours flourishes this autumn.

“Giving the plant as much natural indirect light as possible is one of the main things this plant needs to send out flowers,” says Richard, of Sheffield Made Plants. The horticultural specialist explained that peace lily houseplants require a minimum of six hours of daylight. Those living in the Northern hemisphere are recommended to position their peace lily beside an east-facing window.

Sufficient daylight enables the plant to “effectively photosynthesis and store energy to send out flowers”.

Properly watering your peace lily will also influence its capacity to bloom again, he noted.

This might involve watering your peace lily weekly, though the crucial factor is ensuring the soil has dried out before watering the plant.

Either insufficient or excessive watering of your peace lily will result in a distressed plant that won’t produce new flowers.

Throughout the growing period, particularly autumn, peace lilies thrive when nourished with liquid fertiliser.

The specialist went on to say: “I feed my peace lily with a liquid fertiliser at least once a month in the growing season.

“This helps to keep the foliage green and gives it the nutrients it needs to flower.”

One element that proves especially vital is potassium, which is where his ultimate tip becomes relevant. One kitchen waste the expert suggests is banana, which he chops up finely and incorporates into the plant’s soil.

“This gives the plant a little boost in potassium,” he explained. Provided the plant has sufficient light, and is watered and fertilised properly, it should flower again.

He further advised: “It’s important if you want your plant to bloom like it does in the wild, try not to allow the temperature in your house to drop below 15C.”

By adhering to all of the gardening enthusiast’s top tips, including the use of banana kitchen waste, the peace lily should “flower again”.
