Expert says drivers can cut fuel bills with 10 simple tips

A motoring expert has urged drivers to follow 10 tips that could help them to save a significant amount of money on their fuel bills, finding cheaper prices and improving the fuel economy of their vehicle.

Whilst the Labour Government shocked many Brits by maintaining the current freeze on fuel duty, preventing the price of petrol and diesel from rising, many drivers are looking for ways to cut the running costs of their vehicle.

The financial advice service Money Helper offered a number of tips, recommending that drivers start by researching fuel prices in their area, particularly at fuel stations they regularly pass.

They advised: “We’d always advocate shopping around for the lowest price, and supermarket pumps are often the cheapest. But it’s pointless driving out of your way to save a few pence per litre.

“However, if you get to know the petrol stations on your regular routes, you’ll know which ones are cheapet – so pull in to those pumps when you’re driving past.”

Money Helper also suggested that drivers make a number of small changes to the way they act behind the wheel, generally being much smoother with the pedals.

By avoiding cases of harsh acceleration and braking, drivers can prevent putting strain on the engine, causing it to rev much harder and burn more fuel.

To stay safe whilst following this tip, drivers should maintain a good view of the road ahead to easily prepare for potential situations they are approaching, slowing changing their speed to preserve fuel economy.

Finally, the company advised drivers to take a couple of measures to lighten their vehicle, starting by removing heavy items from the boot and other storage compartments.

Whilst it is important for drivers to stay prepared for unforseen circumstances like breakdowns, bulky items that are not needed increase the overall weight of the vehicle, causing the engine to work harder in order to maintain a desired speed.

External accessories, such as door mirror extensions and roof racks should also be removed if they are not in use as they make the vehicle less aerodynamic, which can have a particular impact on fuel consumption when travelling on high-speed roads, such as motorways.
