With temperatures slowly starting to warm up and the spring sunshine appearing, households may wonder when to completely turn their heating off to save some money. Taking into consideration different factors, including energy prices and weather conditions, a heating expert has shared the “exact date” when you should turn the heating off.

Dave Lines from HomeHow.co.uk said: “If you’re looking for an exact date when you should turn the central heating off, Sunday, March 30 is the day to mark in your diary. There are a few good reasons for picking today. Firstly, the clocks went forward. This means we’re getting out of bed and moving around an hour earlier and starting to do more in the evenings as it’s still light.

“So, we’re not necessarily at home or sitting around as much. We’re also drawing the curtains back earlier in the morning and later in the evening, allowing the sun to gently warm rooms.

“Because of this, we don’t need the heating on so much. Secondly, the temperatures consistently reach between 12C and 15C, so our homes naturally get warmer.”

As well as the clocks changing and the weather getting warmer, there’s also another reason to consider switching your heating off today.

From April 1, 2025, the Energy Price Cap is rising from 24.86p to 27.03p per kWh for electricity and from 6.34p to 6.99p per kWh for gas.

This means turning the heating off before the prices rise could help you “save” on your energy bills.

The expert added: “Although today is the best date to turn your heating off, it’s important to understand that this date isn’t set in stone and may not work for every family or home.

“For instance, if you work from home and are sitting at your desk all day, you may need to keep the heating on for a bit longer to stop you from getting cold.

“Similarly, those who are older or have health conditions can benefit from keeping the heating on for at least a few hours a day during spring to ensure they’re warm and comfortable.”

If you’re still feeling the chill after today in the mornings and evenings, consider lowering the thermostat temperature to get ready for warmer weather.

According to the heating pro, this enables you to gradually reduce your heating use, giving you a smooth transition into summer.

However, Dave agreed that today, March 30, is the “optimum date” to turn your heating off in order to get ready for spring.
