Driveways are one of the safest and most convenient places to keep your car, as they reduce the risk of accidental damage from other road users and break-ins. However, motorists who park their cars on a driveway have been reminded of a lesser-known rule that can help keep both themselves and their vehicles safe. The Highway Code states that drivers can greatly reduce their chances of being involved in an accident by changing how they enter and exit their driveway. According to Rule 201 in the “Reversing” section of the Highway Code, motorists should always reverse into a parking space where possible. It states: “Do not reverse from a side road into a main road. When using a driveway, reverse in and drive out if you can.”
Whilst it is often more convenient to simply drive forward onto the driveway, the Highway Code warns that doing so can be more dangerous. This is because motorists will need to reverse out of the space at the start of their next journey, which may require greater skill and patience.
If a driver lives on a particularly busy road, or on a corner where visibility is restricted, reversing out of their driveway could also put them at a higher risk of being involved in an accident. The Highway Code also recommends that drivers remain cautious about where they reverse when they need to turn around, suggesting they find a quiet side road instead.
It advises: “Choose an appropriate place to manoeuvre. If you need to turn your vehicle around, wait until you find a safe place.
Try not to reverse or turn round in a busy road; find a quiet side road or drive round a block of side streets.” Motorists are therefore being encouraged to take a few extra moments when parking on their driveways to ensure they can leave safely when setting off on their next journey.
Although reversing into a driveway may take slightly longer, it can provide drivers with a much clearer view of the road ahead when pulling out, helping them spot approaching vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians. While the advice may seem like a minor change to everyday driving habits, following it could make a significant difference to road safety.
Drivers are advised to always take care when manoeuvring, check their surroundings carefully, and never rush when reversing, particularly where visibility is limited or other road users may be nearby.
