If you are the kind of traveller who enjoys uncovering hidden gems and enchanting destinations, then Odense in Denmark is the place to visit. The city, which is the third largest in Denmark, is most known as the birthplace of Hans Christian Andersen, the Danish author globally best remembered for his literary fairy tales.

And stepping into the city is just like being in a fairytale, from its dazzling castle to the charming old streets, the museum and strong cycling culture, Odense is a city that captivates both its residents and tourists.

The city, which The Independent named as the number one city to visit in Denmark, is also home to Hans Christian Andersen’s House, where a visit is like stepping into the “magical world and genius” of the author. The museum combines architecture, nature and narrative in one place, perfect to fuel the minds of visitors regardless of their age.

One person on TripAdvisor said: “Super good communication of life, work, inspiration sources, work. Exciting, varied, engages many senses, takes action, addresses both adults and children.”

A second wrote: “Really a positive experience. Never been there before and didn’t know exactly what to expect.
An exciting way to make a museum that really gives a good experience through H.C. Andersen’s journey. You get into his universe.”

Odense is also an ideal city for cycling enthusiasts. The bike-friendly city, which is number one in Denmark for cycling, offers more than 560km of bike paths, several bike parking spaces, and public bicycle pumps, making it easy to explore the stunning city by bike.

The city is continuing to expand its cycling routes and offers numerous options for hiring and renting bikes or E-scooters.

Odense streets are lined with beautiful architecture that is both modern and pays homage to its heritage, from the medieval cobbled streets to colourful townhouses; there is so much to admire across the city.

Beyond the beautiful buildings, Odense’s gardens and parks are also noteworthy. The green spaces surrounding the city significantly contribute to the tranquil and calming atmosphere that the city offers.

Running right through the city centre is the Odense River, where boats can be rented to enjoy a scenic ride through the area.
