Picking your holiday hotspot is one of the more exciting yet overwhelming activities when there is so much choice to choose from. However, a travel expert has narrowed down the top “hidden gems” in Europe, with one Mediterranean Island taking the top spot. Sicily, located on the boot of Italy, is rich with a dazzling diversity of landscapes and cultural treasures.

The largest island in the Mediterranean offers a plethora of activities for all types of travellers this summer, with ancient history spread throughout, and the coast lined with beautiful beaches. Sicily is one five Italian autonomous regions which houses multiple UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The island has a longstanding history with mythology and ancient Greece after they colonised it in the 8th century BC.

Travel expert and Head of European Product at Riviera Travel, Joanne Lynn, says: “During your Sicilian trip, explore Agrigento’s Valley of the Temples, a remarkable archaeological wonder, and marvel at the intricate frescoes and mosaics of Piazza Armenia, an incredibly well-preserved Roman Villa.

“A trip to Syracuse, home of Archimedes, is a must. Visit this jewel of the ancient Greek empire, renowned for its wealth and cultural significance. Explore its historic core, Ortygia, where echoes of philosophical debates and scientific breakthroughs still linger in the air.”

Sicilian food is another major reason to visit the island with its traditional dishes taking influence from across the Med. A plethora of pasta dishes can be found across Sicily, with local restaurants using seasonal vegetables from local farmers.

Fresh seafood and indulgent sweet treats using centuries old pastry recipes are two other reasons to make the trip.

Despite its local charm, the island sees flocks of tourists exploring the Italian region each year, with over 5.5 million visitors descending there in 2023, according to Knoema.

Brits wanting to embark on a trip to Sicily this summer can fly there directly from multiple cities across the country. The average flight time is around three hours, with tickets available for less than £40.
