European country is ‘as beautiful as Italy and Croatia’ but without the sea of tourists | Travel News | Travel

There is a European country that people describe as just as beautiful as Italy and Croatia, but it doesn’t have the huge crowds of tourists that these more popular destinations have. Many Brits haven’t explored much of what Europe has to offer, and with cheap flights and a wide rail network connecting the continent, it has never been easier. One of the most beautiful countries in Europe is also one of the most underrated, with fascinating history, great weather and stunning natural scenery. Slovenia is one of the most overlooked countries that Brits should start considering for their summer holiday.

Slovenia is located in Southern Europe, wedged between Italy, Austria, Hungary and Croatia. The small country is famous for its mountainous landscape, something that proves popular during the skiing season. However, Slovenia has plenty to offer tourists in the summer months. In fact, temperatures can reach as high as 30C in July and August. Tourists who have been to Slovenia have had overwhelmingly positive things to say about their experiences there, praising its vibrant towns and cities and its offerings for lovers of nature and the outdoors.

One reviewer from The Telegraph hailed Slovenia as a lovely alternative for “crowded Croatia”, while Tripadvisor reviewers compared it positively to Italy. As anti-tourism protests ramp up in certain parts of Europe, Slovenia might be one of the best places to go to feel welcome as a holidaymaker in 2025.

One of the most famous sites in Slovenia is Lake Bled, a stunning natural spot where you can swim against the backdrop of the massive mountains. Tourists love this place and have had great things to say about it. One reviewer on Tripadvisor wrote: “Slovenia is a real hidden gem in Europe.

“I had the chance to visit the famous Lake Bled, which amazed me with its beautiful views and the postcard-perfect island in the middle. I think it’s a great place for people of all ages. The area has lots of things to do, like renting a boat, canyoning, rafting, biking trips and more. If you have a car, you can see even more.”

Other top-rated attractions in Slovenia include Ljubljana Old Town, the old and quaint part of the country’s capital that has adorable winding streets and great places to eat and drink. Tourists have praised this spot for being “clean and safe”. One person said they were “completely charmed” by their time there.

Nature lovers would have the time of their lives in Slovenia. As well as the iconic Lake Bled, there are standout spots of natural beauty such as Lake Jasna, Soca Valley, Triglav National Park and Lake Bohinj.

For history and culture lovers, the capital city has plenty to offer, including Ljubljana Castle, Dragon Bridge, Tivoli Park and Saint Nicholas’ Cathedral, to name just a few.

Predjama Castle and Preseren Square are also top-rated things to do here, as are Bled Castle, Triple Bridge and Metelkova. When it comes to visiting Slovenia or Italy, many people have thoughts on which one is better and how you should spend your time and money.

One Tripadvisor user said: “Indeed, these are very different countries. However, if you have time, I would highly recommend visiting Slovenia for its unique nature and culture.”

A second wrote: “Slovenia has loads to offer: Piran by the sea, Ljubljana, Lake Bled, loved Maribor in the north, great wine.”

A third commented: “I think both Italy and Slovenia have a lot to offer. It all depends on what your preferences are. My favourite city in Italy is Florence – with its museums (Uffizi, Accademia), proximity to Pisa and the Tuscany region for the views. Slovenia, on the other hand, offers plenty of outdoor activities such as hiking and kayaking, etc, and very scenic views (Piran, Lake Bled, Lake Bohinj, Kranjska Gora and Soca Valley).”

Direct flights to the capital of Slovenia can be taken from London Gatwick, Heathrow and Luton. Meanwhile, connecting flights can be taken from other UK airports such as Manchester.

In terms of weather, Slovenia reaches highs of 30C in the summertime with temperatures gradually cooling as you move into autumn.
