ESPN’s John Sutcliffe in tears on air after Bad Bunny’s Super Bowl halftime show

Bad Bunny’s halftime show represented more than just a performance for some.

ESPN’s John Sutcliffe became emotional while discussing the world-famous musician’s message of love and inclusion during Super Bowl 2026 on Sunday.

“The message Bunny sent, whether you like his music or not, was with love, culture, and affection,” Sutcliffe said in Spanish before the second half, according to the The Daily Beast.

“If you are in Mexico, Argentina, Colombia, Chile, wherever, it’s OK to have a tear in your eye and feel proud that Benito sang in Spanish at America’s biggest celebration. Long live Bad Bunny.”

There has been more discussion about Bad Bunny being selected as the halftime show artist and his performance probably than any other artist in recent memory, save for perhaps the scandalous Justin Timberlake-Janet Jackson “Nipplegate” moment from 2004.

Despite some concerns about what Bad Bunny may say about America — having been critical of certain policies in the past — the “DTMF” singer instead focused on a positive message.

He said, “God bless America” to end his 10-plus minute act while also listing South and Central America countries, and held a football inscribed with “Together we are America.”

The scoreboards at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif. also read: “The only things more powerful than hate is love.”

Sutcliffe, a 26-year veteran from ESPN who is based in Mexico City, is among those who truly felt touched by the performance.

His voice cracked and he appeared to have tears in his eyes while he spoke from the sideline before the Seahawks would turn a 9-0 halftime lead into a 29-13 lead.

Sutcliffe called Super Bowl 2026 “a very special night” in a tweet, and has thanked those who have spotlighted his reaction.

“A special Sunday,” he posted, “many thanks to everyone for joining me this season, thanks for your comments, let’s chat for a bit, I read them and reply to you 🏈.”
