An ESPN employee died after suffering a medical emergency before the beginning of an NCAA Tournament baseball super regional Saturday, the company confirmed Sunday.
The start of Saturday’s game between No. 16 Alabama and No. 1 Wake Forest in Game 1 of the Winston-Salem Super Regional was delayed two hours after officials described a “non-game-related medical event” occurred.
ESPN said director Kyle Brown “suffered a medical emergency and tragically passed away.”
Brown, 42, was with ESPN for 16 years, and had won Sports Emmy Awards while working on baseball, basketball, college football and “Monday Night Football.”
“A former Ohio State pitcher, Kyle cherished the opportunity to have a career in sports. His ESPN family wishes to extend our deepest condolences and full sports to Kyle’s loved ones.”
Prior to ESPN’s coverage of super regional play Sunday, anchor Kris Budden gave a tribute to Brown while announcing the news of Brown’s passing.
“Kyle will be greatly missed,” Budden said.
Brown is survived by his wife, Megan, and his four children, Makayla, 14, Carson, 11, Camden, 9, and Madyn, 6.
