‘Enchanting’ European country with lush landscapes ignored by tourists | Europe | Travel

If you’re planning a getaway for autumn or winter but don’t know where to go, there’s one country that should be on your radar. When you think of wintery destinations, places like Copenhagen or Berlin might come to mind, but these places are often packed with tourists, making things overwhelming and stressful.

However, one destination which is often snubbed by tourists is Luxembourg – and there’s so much to offer here. Despite being one of Europe’s richest nations, Luxembourg remains remarkably under the tourist radar. According to the travel experts at cruise and tour operator Riviera Travel, Luxembourg was one of the European countries with the fewest tourists last year.

This landlocked, wealthy country has both ancient and modern elements, from historic fortresses to contemporary European institutions, making it the perfect place to spend a couple of days this autumn or winter. Here are 10 of the best things you can do when visiting Luxembourg.

Vianden castle

1. Visit Vianden Castle

Undeniably Luxembourg’s main attraction, this beautiful castle can easily be accessed from Luxembourg City.

The impressive structure was built between the 11th and 14th centuries on the foundations of a Roman ‘castellum’ and a Carolingian refuge.

It’s fully been restored to its former glory and there’s an interactive visitor centre at the front of castle where you can take guided tours if you really want to immerse yourself in the culture and history of this majestic setting.

Taking to TripAdvisor, one impressed fan wrote: “A real medieval jewel! Vianden Castle is superb, beautifully restored and overlooking the valley. The village, with its picturesque streets and museums, is definitely worth a visit. The surrounding nature is splendid and the chairlift offers a unique view. A must-see visit to Luxembourg.”

2. Walk the Mullerthal Trail

If you’re a fan of getting out into nature, then this walking trail is an absolute must. This is the leading hiking trail in Luxembourg’s Mullerthal region, which is known as Little Switzerland due to its similar yet compacted landscapes.

Walking this 112km trail will take you past jaw-dropping waterfalls, sun-dappled forests and impressive rock formations that have to be seen to be believed. There are three main hiking trails, which can be done seperately or together, as well as four extra tours as well. Many of these paths lead to Echternach, the historical and cultural centre of the Mullerthal region, which is also worth a visit.

3. Take in the views at Chemin De La Corniche

This impressive walking path runs right along the river in the Alzette valley. It’s known as the ‘most beautiful balcony in Europe’, and it’s definitely not hard to see why.

From the top, you’ll be treated to sweeping panoramic views of the old buildings of Luxembourg City below, and there are so many gorgeous photo opportunities along the way. It’s recommended you do this walk in the early morning or just before sunset for the most impressive views, according to the travel experts at GPS My City.
