A heart-wrenching drama that left viewers weeping is set to air on BBC Three tonight, and will be available to stream on iPlayer shortly after broadcast.

Released back in 2014, The Fault in Our Stars will be on TV at 8pm today (Sunday, July 6). Directed by Josh Boone, the film is based on John Green’s bestselling 2012 novel of the same.

It follows teenagers Hazel Grace Lancaster (Shailene Woodley) and Augustus Waters (Ansel Elgort), who meet at a cancer support group and fall in love. While their relationship starts off strong, the duo’s illnesses soon cause difficulties in the partnership.

The impressive cast is completed by Jurrasic Park’s Laura Dern, Oscar nominee Willem Dafoe and Paper Towns star Nat Wolff.

Upon its debut, the coming-of-age drama won over critics and viewers alike.

It bagged an impressive 81% score from the critics on Rotten Tomatoes. Their consensus reads: “Wise, funny, and heartbreaking without resorting to exploitation, The Fault In Our Stars does right by its bestselling source material.”

One critic raved: “The subject matter — a pair of teenage cancer sufferers meet and fall in love — could have been mawkish mush, but there’s a sharp, abrasive wit and anger that tempers the tear-jerking with humour.”

Meanwhile, casual moviegoers echoed the praise. “Still one of the best films of 2014! A decade later and this works so well with solid acting, a beautiful love story, and some amazing leads,” penned a recent reviewer.

A second fan reflected on the film’s emotional impact: “I weeped like a baby, it was the first time watching such a heartbreaking romantic story since Titanic… this movie is so excellent it makes it difficult to even think about it without tears in my eyes. I’m a cinephile because of masterpieces like these.”

Over on Google Reviews, another fan shared: “I must say it’s one of the most emotionally charged movies I’ve ever seen. From the very first scene, the movie had me hooked and emotionally invested in the characters and their journey.

“The performances of the lead actors were exceptional, and I found myself relating to their struggles and heartaches. I couldn’t help but cry several times throughout the film, as the story touched on themes of love, loss, and the fragility of life.”

Despite warning others to prepare a box of tissues, viewers avidly recommend the 2014 flick.

The Fault in Our Stars airs on BBC Three tonight at 8PM and streams on BBC iPlayer shortly after broadcast.
