Electric car owners to benefit from ‘easier and more convenient’ charging under new scheme

Electric car owners are set to receive a massive boost under widespread new changes, according to the Department for Transport.

From today, extra support will be dished out to motorists in Nottinghamshire as part of a schools initiative.

A new grant will provide up to 75 percent of the cost to buy and install new charging stations across the region.

Grants will be available up to £2,500 per socket, up from the previous £350 pledge in a massive investment.

The cash will be available for state-funded schools, colleges, nurseries and academies in a bid to boost charging infrastructure.

Minister for the School System and Student Finance at the Department for Education Baroness Barran was excited by the new proposals.

She said: “This is an exciting opportunity for schools across England to become part of an ongoing move towards a greener public sector. Schools engaging with this grant will be supporting the development of green infrastructure, helping to improve their local environments.

“Developing a greener education estate is a key element of our Sustainability and Climate Change Strategy. The expansion of this grant supports our ambition to improve the sustainability of our schools in the ongoing move towards net zero.”

Meanwhile, thousands of new chargers will be installed across the country as part of the £381million Local Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (LEVI) Fund.

The first payments have been approved for three local authorities from East Sussex to North Yorkshire, and two London Boroughs with over £14million now invested.

The Government has also launched a new consultation which could dramatically increase the speed which charging stations can be installed.

Proposed changes would allow EV charging operators to install devices with a permit rather than a licence.

Permits can usually be issued much faster meaning projects can start in days instead of waiting for months.

Technology and Decarbonisation Minister Anthony Browne explained: “We’re getting on with delivering our Plan for Drivers, and this latest set of measures will mean EV owners everywhere benefit from easier and more convenient access to chargepoints.

“This Government has already spent over £2billion to ensure a smooth switch to EVs, and we’re committed to supporting drivers as we transition towards net zero in a proportionate way that doesn’t burden working people.”
