Elden Ring developer FromSoftware surprised fans by announcing a new spinoff called Nightreign during the recent Game Awards event.
Launching in 2025, Elden Ring Nightreign is a roguelike spinoff for PlayStation, Xbox and PC.
While it’s not the story-driven, dark fantasy adventure I was hoping for, the thought of teaming up with a friend to explore this new world was starting to grow on me.
Unfortunately, however, the latest update from game director Junya Ishizaki has killed my interest in the game.
Speaking to IGN, Ishizaki confirmed that Elden Ring Nightreign can be played solo or in teams of three only.
This means there’s no two-player option to explore the procedurally-generated version of Limgrave called Limveld.
I’ll definitely still be playing, but would have enjoyed the multiplayer element a lot more in a duo setting.
The decision was made in order to retain the sense of accomplishment you get from battling bosses and conquering the map, but “in a fresh way”.
Ishizaki continues: “And we felt like focusing on a three-player co-op experience would provide a brand new sense of accomplishment with it.”
Set in a universe parallel to the events of Elden Ring, players must “outlast a three day-and-night cycle”, culminating in a boss battle at the end of the adventure.
It’s described as a “condensed action RPG”, where players will never experience the same journey twice.
There’s a roguelike element to the game, with players earning relics to to customise and upgrade their characters for future runs and increase stats.
Judging by the trailer, we’ll also get enemies and characters from other FromSoftware releases, including Dark Souls 3.
