‘Effectively’ get rid of mould on silicone sealant using a cheap homemade remedy

Silicone sealant found around showers, baths, sinks and windows is a magnet for black mould to grow and unfortunately can be very difficult to clean.

The silicone surface is the perfect condition for mould spores which thrive in humid and wet places such as bathrooms. However, silicone is also designed to be waterproof which means many cleaning agents will not be able to effectively keep it mould-free.

Karl Coppen, the lead technician at MouldMen, a mould removal company, said: “Its rubbery consistency and constant exposure to water and moisture make it the perfect breeding ground for black mould to grow.

“It’s also one of the hardest areas to clean, especially if there is a build-up of black mould over a few months. “

Once spotted, mould needs to be removed as soon as possible due to the health risk it poses, and luckily Karl has explained it can be done “effectively” within minutes.

How to remove black mould from silicone sealant

In a post on the MouldMen website, Karl wrote: “The way in which silicone sealant dries and its positioning creates problems for effective spot removal.

“Luckily, removing black mould from silicone sealant requires products that are commonly found around the house.”

To remove black mould, you will need:

  • Vinegar
  • Baking soda
  • An old toothbrush or hard-bristle brush
  • A clean cloth
  • One bowl
  • One sponge

How to prevent mould

Being able to control the moisture levels in rooms vulnerable to dampness and mould is the best way to keep your home mould-free.

Karl wrote: “This means ensuring the area is adequately ventilated and, if possible, has access to natural light.

“Black mould growth in silicone sealant cannot always be avoided, however, minimising the humidity levels and moisture build-up can lower the chances significantly.”

However, if the black mould repeatedly keeps returning or you are growing concerned, then it may be time to reach out to a professional rather than trying to clean it away yourself.

Karl said: “Black mould can be stubborn and often return if there is an ongoing or underlying issue persisting. In these cases, black mould can become a health concern and can easily spread throughout the household.

“If you are afraid of mould becoming a problem in your home and are looking for a long-term solution, be sure to call upon a professional team to help you.”
