Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has rubbished claims that Alexander Isak informed him a fortnight before the campaign’s conclusion that he wished to depart the club. Reports from the Athletic have suggested that Isak’s departure plans were common knowledge backstage as much as twelve months ago.
Howe was quizzed about whether he harboured concerns that Isak might not be around for their Champions League adventure on the very day Newcastle secured qualification back in May, despite suffering a 1-0 reverse against Everton.
Howe said: “Trust me, when that final whistle went, that (Isak leaving) was the furthest thing from my mind. It was just a feeling of relief really because we were hunting that prize all season.
“We were in and around it after a really good run in December. I was not thinking of any individual in that moment, so I can’t really give an answer on that.”
Howe’s remarks indicate he is being entirely sincere regarding Isak’s circumstances and any advance notice that the forward wished to depart.
Isak himself declared during a press briefing back in March that he planned to hold talks with the club about fresh terms.
Howe was subsequently questioned whether he believed Champions League qualification helped guarantee Isak wouldn’t depart and dismiss transfer speculation well before Liverpool tabled an offer for the Sweden international.
Howe responded: “It was not dependent on Alex. My thinking was not just on one player.
“Qualification was important for the squad in general. We have some outstanding players who want to play and compete in the best competitions.
“So certainly, I had a feeling that would help us keep the majority of the squad. I’m sure we have players coveted by other clubs so that is a big part of what we need to do on a regular basis.
“We need to keep the momentum in the club with performances and results for long-term success.”
