The first picture has emerged of a pensioner who was tragically stabbed to death on Remembrance Sunday.
Hilkiah McLeggan, 77, was killed in the violent incident in south east London that also left several others wounded.
The attack unfolded at the bustling East Street market in Walworth, on November 10.
Mr McLeggan died at the scene, while two other male victims were rushed to hospital for urgent care; one remains in a critical condition.
Police have charged Musse Ali, 66, of no fixed abode, with murder and two counts of attempted murder.
Chief Superintendent Seb Adjei-Addoh, Southwark’s policing commander, said: “This was a horrific incident where a man had lost his life and two other people received serious injuries. The incident has understandably caused concern amongst the local community.”
He assured residents that law enforcement visibility will be heightened in Walworth. He also commended the courageous public members who aided officers during the crisis, reports the Mirror.
Chief Superintendent Adjei-Addoh also addressed misinformation spreading online: “Lastly we are aware of posts circulating on social media, implying this was a terrorist incident. Our enquiries indicate this is not the case and we ask the public not to speculate.”
The Met Police are urging witnesses or anyone with information to come forward and contact them on 101 or via @MetCC, quoting reference 2690/10Nov.
Detective Chief Inspector Alison Foxwell commented: “Our officers have worked quickly to investigate this tragic incident and secure these charges. I would like to thank the members of the public who have assisted us so far and encourage anyone who hasn’t spoken with us, to get in contact.”
