Taylor Swift faced an unwelcome response at the Super Bowl, accused of betraying her Philadelphia Eagles by rooting for Travis Kelce’s Kansas City Chiefs. At Sunday’s face-off, the Eagles soared to victory over the Chiefs with a score of 40-22 at the Superdome, clinching their second Lombardi Trophy, buoyed by Vic Fangio’s unyielding defense which stifled Patrick Mahomes and his teammates.
During the early stages of the game, cameras captured Swift in the crowd, leading to a barrage of boos from spectators. The 35-year-old singer attended the event to cheer on her boyfriend, Kelce, as he played for the Chiefs.
However, her recent media attention due to her romantic involvement with Kelce, which became public during the 2023 season, has drawn criticism from NFL fans.
Taken aback by the hostile reception, Swift was seen giving rapper Ice Spice, seated beside her, a wary glance. Amidst celebrations at the Eagles’ Super Bowl victory parade, devoted Philadelphia fans vocalised their disapproval, slamming Swift for not remaining loyal to her hometown team.
“She’s basically a traitor,” one disgruntled fan confided to DailyMail.com on Friday. “She should stay solid with Philly, that’s where she’s from.
“I don’t know if she necessarily deserved it but at the same time it just happens, I mean Eagles fans boo their own players when they’re doing bad. It’s not necessarily a whole thing about her. It just had to be expected, she was an Eagles fan and then she traded that in to go with the Chiefs. You can’t expect anything less. I don’t think it was anything personal, it just happened to be about the team she was rooting for that day.”
Celebrate the Philadelphia Eagles Super Bowl LIX win with this commemorative shirt, another fan suggested: “Here’s the deal, we boo everybody. And the fact of the matter is she was with her boyfriend Travis Kelce who’s a Chiefs player, so she’s affiliated with the Chiefs.”
Given her upbringing in Pennsylvania, Swift was known to be a fervent Eagles supporter and even mentioned the NFC East franchise in one of her songs before dating Kelce. The lyric ‘Gold Rush’ includes the line “With my Eagles T-shirt hanging from the door.”
Swift confirmed her allegiance to the Eagles during an ‘Eras Tour’ concert at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia two years ago. Addressing the crowd, Swift clarified: “I saw some people wondering if it (the Eagles T-shirt referenced) was the band Eagles or the team Eagles. And I love the band Eagles, but guys, come on, I’m from Philly – of course it’s the team.”
In the previous season, as chatter about their budding relationship burgeoned, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid, during an appearance on ‘The Five Spot’ podcast with ex-Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb, was quizzed about his fondness for pop sensation Swift. Reid responded: “You know what, like you I knew her from Philadelphia. Her dad is a big NFL fan so I had met her when she was real young.
“I joked about setting Kelce up but I’m just saying… she’s a good girl. She’s into it and we’re glad she’s here.”
