The DVSA has warned road users can take advantage of a simple service to dodge a hefty £1,000 fine. The DVSA’s free MOT test reminder service ensures road users get a notification just ahead of their expiry date.
The simple message is set to make sure motorists don’t forget the crucial exam which could see individuals slapped with hefty punishments. Driving without a valid MOT certificate in the place is a serious motoring offence with drivers at risk of fines of up to £1,000.
Those with a lorry, bus or large trailer will usually be notified two months ahead of an MOT expiry date.
As well as reminding drivers to book in a test, the messages could also alert drivers to any outstanding vehicle recalls.
Certain garages offer their own vehicle MOT reminder service so individuals will never miss an appointment.

A reminder service can ensure motorists book their MOT test with plenty of time to avoid disappointment if there are waiting lists.
Motorists cannot legally drive a car once their MOT has expired unless they are travelling to a garage.
Halfords said: “An MOT can be carried out up to one month, minus a day, prior to the expiry date of your existing MOT certificate, whilst still preserving the anniversary of the expiry date.
“For example: If you have your test carried out a month before the due date, your MOT is effectively valid for 13 months.”
