Motorists have been issued a warning as temperatures soar across the UK this week. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued alerts from 12pm on Wednesday (June 18) until 6pm on Sunday (June 22) for all but three areas of England.
Forecasters from the Met Office expect temperatures to hit 32C in London while other parts of the nation will see the mercury reach the high 20s. Many people will be looking for the best ways to cool off, which might include eating an ice cream. While eating one behind the wheel is not illegal, motorists could face a hefty fine if it causes them to drive carelessly.
Ash Young, a car expert from 1Dot, said: “Most drivers don’t realise that something as innocent as eating an ice cream cone can be classed as ‘driving without due care and attention’ if it affects your ability to control the vehicle.
“If police judge that you’re distracted or not fully in control, you could be hit with an on-the-spot fine of £200 and up to six points on your licence.”
Actions such as reaching for snacks, eating or using a phone can fall under Section 3 of the Road Traffic Act 1988. Drivers are advised to pull over safely if they’re hungry and are about to eat.
Ash added: “Ultimately, it’s not about banning food – it’s about safety. If you’re eating with one hand and lose focus for a second, it could have serious consequences for you and other road users.”
Temperatures are set to increase throughout this weekend and into the weekend. Forecasters say the surge is linked to southerly winds ushering warm air from Europe.
Met Office deputy chief meteorologist Dan Holley said: “Heat is the main story this week, with high pressure building and temperatures rising to heatwave levels in some areas by the weekend. Today and tomorrow, we could see maximum temperatures of 27C in the south of England, and 29C on Thursday.”
He added: “The trend for temperatures to rise continues into Friday, with a maximum of 30C in central England. With the hot temperatures, we could also see some thundery showers across the far west Friday night into Saturday.
“Widespread very warm conditions are expected on Saturday, with a top temperature of 32C. Sunday looks to see the peak of the very warm spell, with a headline max of 33C possible. Warm and perhaps even ‘tropical nights’ will also be a feature this week.”
