Drivers have been urged to do one thing regularly to avoid being put at a much higher risk of accidents and even fines when taking to the roads.

With the UK recently experiencing spells of sunny weather, many drivers are facing the frustration of low sunlight, which can easily obscure their view of the road.

According to the car fluids brand Prestone, one of the easiest ways in which drivers can avoid harsh glare from causing problems behind the wheel is by regularly washing their windows.

They advised: “A clean windscreen and mirrors are crucial during winter when the harsh winter sun is already trying its hardest to obscure your view.

“By regularly cleaning your windscreen and mirrors, you can reduce the chance of glare. Using a high-quality screen wash on external glass areas and a trusted glass cleaner for the internal and external mirrors will help keep these surfaces clear.”

Whilst few drivers enjoy getting out the bucket and sponge to wash their car, making sure that all of the windows are regularly cleaned can help to prevent glare from low sunlight.

This is because dirt that is gradually applied to the windows through regular driving can help to amplify light, making it significantly harder for motorists to see through.

To prevent glare from causing accidents, and even fines of up to £1,000 for having a dirty windscreen, drivers should regularly give their windows a clean, using a specialist glass cleaner for the best results.

Similarly, Prestone urged drivers to make good use of the two sun visors to block low sunlight from the windscreen and side windows of the vehicle.

They continued: “The sun visor is there for a reason, so be sure to use it to block low winter sun, just as you would in the summer. Arguably, the sun visor becomes even more important during the months where the sun is lower in the sky, because of how piercing it can be.”

Drivers can also pack a pair of sunglasses to improve visibility in bright weather. However, these must be able to let at least eight percent of light through to ensure a good enough view of the road.
